Google India announces 'Year in Search 2023' results

Google India has announced the results of “Year in Search 2023” as the year concludes. In 2023, India gained global attention for various reasons, including its historic moon landing and economic presence. Cricket, movies, sports teams, actors, and athletes remained popular search topics globally.

Landmark National Moments

Chandrayaan-3’s success and India’s G20 presidency were important topics. Searches included Karnataka Elections Results, Uniform Civil Code, Israel News, and the Turkey Earthquake.

Interest in self-care and technology

In the spirit of self-care, ‘How To’ question focused on enquiring about ways to prevent sun damage for skin and hair with home remedies. Searches for zudios, gyms, beauty parlours, and dermatologists were also common.  Questions like ‘how to reach my first 5K followers on YouTube’ reflected the growing creator ecosystem.

Indian cricket’s local and global dominance

Cricket World Cup and India vs Australia matches were highly searched. Indian National Cricket team ranked as the top trending global cricket team. Cricketers Shubman Gill and Rachin Ravindra emerged as the top trending cricketers locally and globally.

Diversity in sports

The first-ever Women’s Premier League, along with the Women’s Cricket World Cup, ranked high in sports events. Beyond cricket, people tried their hand with other sports on-field with questions about ‘How to get good at Kabaddi’ and ‘How to become a chess grandmaster.’

Worldwide recognition for Indian entertainment

The Barbenheimer phenomenon and Indian films like Jawan, Gadar 2, and Pathaan received global attention. Gadar 2 and Pathaan also secured coveted spots as local and worldwide trending films. Kesariya was the second most hummed song globally. Kiara Advani topped the trending people list in India and globally. In the Barbie vs Oppenheimer battle, ultimately the latter led the charge in international entertainment searches in India.

Digital entertainment and trends

With six of the top 10, local OTT content dominated trending shows, leading to Farzi, Asur, and Rana Naidu taking top ranks. People expressed themselves with a range of entertaining memes, be it the humorous ‘Bhupendra Jogi’ meme, ‘So Beautiful So Elegant’ meme that turned Delhi-based Jasmeen Kaur into an internet sensation, or Serbian-song inspired ‘Moye Moye’ meme that saw people finding humour in difficult situations.

Travel and recipe trends

Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam, Indonesia (Bali), and Thailand, were quite popular travel choice. Goa, Kashmir, Coorg, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands were preferred local destinations. Indian delicacies like Mango pickle, Panchamrit, Karanji, Thiruvathirau Kali, Ugadi Pachadi, Kolukattai, and Rava Ladoo led recipe searches.
