Snapchat to release 'My AI' chatbot powered by ChatGPT

Snapchat has announced that it is soon going to launch its own chatbot - named ‘My AI’ - which is powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

With the rollout of Generative AI platforms like ChatGPT and Bard, AI chatbots have become the talk of the town in the current day and age. As a result, many of the digital players have also begun leveraging artificial intelligence tools on their respective platforms.

Snapchat announced the rollout of My AI through a company blogpost, wherein it mentioned, “My AI can recommend birthday gift ideas for your BFF, plan a hiking trip for a long weekend, suggest a recipe for dinner, or even write a haiku about cheese for your cheddar-obsessed pal. Make My AI your own by giving it a name and customising the wallpaper for your Chat.”

“As with all AI-powered chatbots, My AI is prone to hallucination and can be tricked into saying just about anything. Please be aware of its many deficiencies and sorry in advance! All conversations with My AI will be stored and may be reviewed to improve the product experience. Please do not share any secrets with My AI and do not rely on it for advice,” it further read.

Additionally, the blogpost also clarified that while My AI is designed to avoid biased, incorrect, harmful, or misleading information, mistakes may occur.

As per Evan Spiegel, CEO, Snap Inc, the plan of introducing generative AI chatbot is Snapchat’s bet on how AI chatbots will become an integral part of everyday life of people in the times to come.

In his interaction with The Verge, Spiegel announced that ‘My AI’ chatbot will be pinned to the app’s chat tab above conversations with friends and will be initially available only to the Snapchat Plus Subscribers for $3.99 per month.

He also went on to add that the company plans to make the bot available to all the 750 million monthly users of Snapchat in the coming times.

It is also to be noted that Snap Inc is one of the first clients of OpenAI’s enterprise tier named Foundry - which allows companies to run its latest GPT-3.5 model with dedicated compute designed for large workloads.

“The big idea is that in addition to talking to our friends and family every day, we’re going to talk to AI every day. And this is something we’re well positioned to do as a messaging service,” he stated.

As per reports, Snap’s implementation of generative AI is more of a similitude to a persona as My AI’s profile page looks like any other user profile on the application. Several reports also suggest that the design of My AI is meant to be another friend inside of Snapchat for you to hang out with, not a search engine.

It is also being predicted that Snapchat’s My AI is most likely to give an added boost to Snapchat’s paid subscriber numbers in the short-term, and eventually open up new ways for the company to make money.
