E-Commerce major Amazon has signed an agreement to purchase some assets from MX Player. However, there is still time for the transaction to be completed.
An Amazon spokesperson said, “We are always looking for ways to introduce new products and services that help improve customers’ lives. We’re excited to continue to entertain India with the great local originals and exclusive content available across our Prime Video and miniTV services in India.”
The deal doesn't involve the full acquisition of the OTT player, but some assets.
The statement implies that Amazon will be integrating MX Player’s content IP with Amazon Prime and Mini TV.
The talks about Amazon acquiring MX Player surfaced last year in March. The deal was later called off in July due to the valuation mismatch.
The acquisition discussion was renewed earlier in February this year.
Times Internet acquired MX Player in 2018 for $140 million. MX Player launched as a video player on July 18, 2011. Later in 2019, it pivoted to an OTT streaming platform, catering primarily to the Indian audience.
MX Player was also one of the earliest video apps to expand into the short video format by launching MX Takatak, which eventually merged with ShareChat’s short video offering Moj in a deal worth $900 million.
DineOut was acquired by Swiggy in May 2022. Mensa acquired MensXP, iDiva, and Hypp from Times Internet in December 2022.
