Government of India has brought “Films and Audio-Visual programmes made available by online content providers”, and “News and current affairs content on online platforms” under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
It may be recalled that Amit Khare, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, had recently said OTT is a subject under the Ministry of Electronics, Information and Technology (MEITY), but Information and Broadcasting wanted the content part to fall under its purview.
For online news content, the I&B Ministry had submitted to the Supreme Court in an affidavit filed in Sudarshan TV case that digital media first needed to be regulated while all other mediums have different regulatory frameworks.
