Modi appeals to businesses to protect jobs as media firms take drastic cost-cutting measures

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to businesses and industries to be empathetic towards their employees and protect their jobs, while announcing the extension of the lockdown till May 3, 2020.

The PM’s statement can be seen as a deterrent for media and entertainment companies in the context of a few layoffs, leave without pay and salary cuts within the first lockdown only.

BestMediaInfo.com reported this morning how TOI laid off Times Life staff members and Raghav Bahl’s The Quint sent 50% workforce on leave without pay.

Additionally, PM said that the lockdown will be relaxed for a few more business activities in the areas that are unaffected or less affected by the Covid-19 pandemic but with strict guidelines. However, he cautioned that the relaxation will be curbed if those areas are infected in the future.
