The nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic has not only made news television the biggest gainer, it has also changed the way English viewers consume content on TV. A couple of years ago, the number of people tuning in to English news channels used to be roughly one-third of viewers of English movie channels.

Over a period of time, the growing penetration and influence of OTT players were already making a visible dent on the reach of English movie channels. Now, more people are tuning in to English news channels for round-the-clock coverage of the unprecedented pandemic crisis as compared to entertainment viewers.

The latest viewership data by BARC India shows that the maximum number of English TV viewers across the television universe tuned in to Republic TV in Week 13 (March 28 to April 3, 2020 : TG: NCCS 2+ India).
19.9 million people across the country watched Republic TV in the latest week followed by Movies Now, which recorded a reach of 13.8 million. HBO and Times Now were tuned in by 10.5 million viewers each.
