The day the Supreme Court delivered its verdict on the Ayodhya land dispute, TV news channels witnessed more than a 2.5x surge in their viewership. While Hindi news TV grew 2.5x, English news TV registered a 2.7x growth on November 9, 2019, when the apex court pronounced the historic judgement.
The long-awaited verdict also got the country glued to their television sets as the Hindi TV news genre saw a major uptick in viewership with most channels seeing an increase between 100% and 300%.
According to data released by BARC India for Week 46 (Nov 9-15, 2019) TG: HSM 15+, overall Hindi TV news impressions increased by 149% to 270287, from a 4-week average of 108424. The genre was led by Aaj Tak that witnessed about 4x growth in its viewership over the last 4-week average while ABP News and NDTV India grew about 3.5x.

Republic TV retained the top position among English news channels while India Today witnessed maximum surge in its viewership. India Today grew 3.5x on the verdict day compared with 4-week average.
According to the BARC India data for Week 46 (Nov 9-15, 2019) TG: All India AB M 22+, Republic TV had almost double the viewership of the No. 2 channel on the verdict day.
