To expand its fan base further, the National Basketball Association (NBA) is soon going to feature Hindi commentary during Sony Six broadcasts of NBA Conference Finals and NBA Finals live games in India. The games will be simulcast in English on Sony Six and Sony Six HD. NBA is reportedly watched by over 140 million people in India over the course of last season.
The English commentary featuring the voices of Marv Albert and Jeff van Gundy, Mike Breen and Kevin Harlan, Doris Burke and Mark Jackson and Walt Frazier have become as legendary as the biggest moments in the game itself. NBA fans in India are relatively familiar with these voices, but there is definitely a possibility of reaching out to a wider range of audience with Hindi commentary.
“Together with our longstanding partner Sony Six, we are excited to offer Hindi commentary in the upcoming NBA Conference Finals and NBA Finals starting May 16. We are also committed to bring more localised offerings to our fans in India, and the inclusion of in-game Hindi commentary allows us to further engage with our Hindi-speaking supporters as we enter into the final stretch of the NBA season,” said Yannick Colaco, India’s Managing Director, NBA.
As audio is very important for sports content, the success of NBA in Hindi will mainly depend on the quality of commentators. For that, it is still in the process of finding speakers who are well versed with basketball and also articulate in Hindi.
