It's a tough world when the competition is at the global level, especially if it is the Cannes Lions Festival. And 2013 was no different. According to the just published The 2013 Cannes Report, the Indian flag has been primarily been kept flying by Ogilvy & Mather India, McCann Worldgroup India and Taproot India.
Creative powerhouse and India's largest agency, O&M, is the only Indian agency to find a place in the Agency of the Year list, ranking #19. JWT, at one time the agency of choice, has failed to figure in the rankings in any category.
At the individual level, Taproot's Santosh Padhi aka Paddy is the only Indian to find a place as the 9th best Copywriter in the global Top 10 list (reported by BestMediaInfo.com yesterday).
In Country Rankings, India came in a creditable #7 with 34 Lions. The USA topped the rankings with 187 Lions, followed by the emerging creative powerhouse Brazil at #2 with 115 Lions. The UK was at #3 with 108 Lions and Australia came in at #4 with 92 Lions. France with its 56 Lions was #5.
In Media Agency of the Year rankings, the Indian performance was zilch even though hallowed names dominate this segment of advertising in India. Last year Leo Burnett Mumbai had ranked #18.
In the category Highest Ranked Agencies: Design, India finds three mentions. At #2 is Ogilvy & Mather Gurgaon, McCann Worldgroup Mumbai is #16, and Taproot India is #18.
In the Highest Ranked Agencies: Press list, Taproot India came in at #9 and McCann Worldgroup Mumbai at #19.
In Geographical Ranking: Asia Pacific, O&M Gurgaon scored a creditable #3, followed by Taproot India at #8 and McCann Worldgroup Mumbai at #18. Last year's mentions, Leo Burnett and DDB Mudra Group, dropped out of this listing this time. McCann Melbourne Melbourne topped the rankings in Asia Pacific followed by Dentsu Tokyo at #2.
Mumbai proved its strength as the hub of Indian advertising by ranking #12 in the global City Rankings list with 24 Lions to its credit. The top 5 cities were: 1. São Paulo - 109 Lions; 2. London - 109 Lions; 3. New York - 80 Lions; 4. Paris - 55 Lions; and 5. Sydney - 50 Lions.
