Viewers complain of app crashes, buffering issues during IPL on JioCinema

JioCinema, which has the digital streaming rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, received backlash from viewers over complaints of app crash or buffering during the matches being played live. 

People started complaining of app crashes during the opening match of the season between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans. JioCinema drew flak during the second and third match as well, as some social media users still complained of glitches. 

"So many influencers promoted JioCinema and set high expectations and as a result JioCinema crashed on the first day. Never had this problem with Hotstar. Had to switch back to Star," Ayush Srivastava, a Twitter user wrote. 

Another user, Shivam Mishra, shared, "Worst experience of watching this IPL on JioCinema. Please improve your services. Faced 100 errors during one inning. 'Something went wrong' notification popped up and video stopped."

A journalist, Arnab Dutta, wrote, "Thank you JioCinema for a never before IPL experience. For the last 25 minutes, since I have switched on, I am stuck with this screen…live broadcast is yet to load! WoW!!!"

On the second day, some viewers complained that English commentary kept losing audio feed, along with some other glitches. 

"JioCinema, the audio quality is very bad. Literally the sound is low and audio is breaking in between, no sound for a while. Please look into it," Satya Sanigaram tweeted. 

"The main problem with Jio streaming quality is that they are not able to mix commentary and ground atmosphere together, giving the studio voice and artificially generated one. Although it's just two matches, let's hope they fix it," another Twitter user, who went by the handle name of Unpopular Opinion, shared. 

The buffering issue was apparently back again on the third day.

"Sound quality is too low and streaming is also buffering too much," Saptarshi Das said. 

"I miss watching IPL on Hotstar. Might even be willing to pay an add-on subscription just to have that seamless experience. At present, watching IPL is such a pain," Favvaz Thadey tweeted. 

Another Twitter user, Abhishek Saurabh, said that, "Third day in a row and JioCinema is still not playable on mobile phones. Please confirm is it going to remain the same for the whole IPL or you will just send a support team link which is of no use?"

JioCinema responded to some tweets expressing regret over the situation and suggesting some tips to fix specific issues that viewers faced during the matches. 

Earlier, JioCinema had faced similar criticism during the starting days of FIFA World Cup 2022. 

Reliance-backed Viacom18 is streaming the IPL 2023 for free on JioCinema. Earlier, Disney Hotstar used to stream the matches. 

While the exclusive TV rights for IPL 2023-2027 went to Disney Star India for Rs 23,575 crore, Viacom18 had bagged the digital rights for Rs 20,500 crore. After bagging a slew of sporting rights in soccer (FIFA World Cup, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue1), badminton, tennis and basketball (NBA), this was the first major foray of Viacom18 into cricket.
