Google expands News Showcase, adds more regional languages and publications

Google News Initiative has added four new languages and on-boarded 50 partners who represent 70+ publications. The platform has partnered with global innovation lab Echos and Digipub News India Foundation to run a program for digital news startups

Google News Initiative has added four new India languages to support regional content and local readers in the country.

The newly added languages are Kannada, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu, in addition to English and Hindi, in dedicated News Showcase panels.

It has also on-boarded 50 partners who represent 70+ publications across the country, including Loksatta, Public TV, Lokmat, NavRashtra and other regional players.

From digital players to local media, Google News Initiative has been associated with all kinds of publications since its launch. Now with more regional players, it aims to support local people with quality news.

Under the Google News Initiative, Google has introduced a 16-week long accelerator program for digital news startups. The Google News Initiative (GNI) Startups Lab program aims to provide coaching, skill training and support to aspiring news entrepreneurs from across India.

The program is created in partnership with the global innovation lab Echos and Digipub News India Foundation.
"Digipub is excited to partner with Google News Initiative Startups Lab to make the digital media ecosystem robust and sustainable. Digital news media is the future of news in India and collaborations like these will ensure that new entrants receive the support they deserve," Dhanya Rajendran, Chairperson of Digipub News India Foundation, commented in a Google Blog Post.

Applications for this program will be available until October 18, 2021. According to the Blog post, Google will select 10 independent digital news platforms to take part in this program.

In May 2021, Google had announced the expansion of Google News Showcase in India, to support news organisations and readers.

Now with its recent moves, Google aims to help local readers to get access to the latest news in their regional languages and support start-ups in the digital news space.
