Google pauses AI photo tool due to inaccuracies in historical depictions: Report

Google is temporarily halting its AI tool that generates images of people due to inaccuracies found in some historical depictions produced by the model, as per media reports.

Google recently introduced image generation capabilities through its Gemini AI models. However, in the past few days, several users on social media have pointed out instances where the model produced historical images that were sometimes inaccurate.

"We're aware that Gemini is offering inaccuracies in some historical image generation depictions," Google had said on Wednesday.

Since the debut of OpenAI's ChatGPT in November 2022, Google has been striving to develop AI software that can compete with the offerings of the Microsoft-backed company, as per the report.

When Google launched its generative AI chatbot, Bard, a year ago, the company shared inaccurate information about pictures of a planet outside the Earth's solar system in a promotional video. This led to a decline in shares, dropping as much as 9%.

Earlier this month, Google rebranded Bard as Gemini and introduced paid subscription plans. These plans allow users to access enhanced reasoning capabilities from the AI model.

Jack Krawczyk, Senior Director of Product for Gemini at Google, said, "Historical contexts have more nuance to them and we will further tune to accommodate that."
