E-commerce giant Amazon is set to lay off several hundred employees across its Prime Video and MGM Studios divisions.
Mike Hopkins, Senior Vice-President of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, communicated the news of the layoffs to the staff through a written note, according to media reports.
Hopkins said that the company has taken this step in order to prioritise their investments for the long-term success of their business.
Reports quoted Hopkins saying, "Throughout the past year, we’ve looked at nearly every aspect of our business with an eye towards improving our ability to deliver even more breakthrough movies, TV shows, and live sports in a personalised, easy-to-use entertainment experience for our global customers."
"As a result, we’ve identified opportunities to reduce or discontinue investments in certain areas while increasing our investment and focus on content and product initiatives that deliver the most impact. As a result of these decisions, we will be eliminating several hundred roles across the Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios organisation," he added.
The layoff news came the same day when various reports also stated that Amazon’s Twitch livestreaming unit announced it would cut 500 jobs.
