Supreme Court grants Amazon Prime Video's Aparna Purohit interim protection from arrest

The Supreme Court has granted interim protection from arrest to Amazon Prime Video's Head of India Originals Aparna Purohit. However, the bench has asked her to cooperate with the investigation and appear before the police when summoned.

The Supreme Court’s interim order comes after Purohit had challenged the Allahabad High Court’s order denying her anticipatory bail in the matter. The bench also noted that the newer regulations in place for the OTT platforms are toothless and such content cannot be regulated without a law in place. This comes a week after the centre issued guidelines for digital media and OTT platforms under Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

FIR against Purohit and makers of the show were filed after people alleged that the show was hurting religious sentiments. The platform and the makers of the show have apologised and the scenes in question have been deleted.
