Bob Iger, Chief Executive of Disney, in an internal email to his employees, a copy of which is with BestMediaInfo.com, said Disney+ will launch in India through Hotstar service on March 29. The launch has been planned to coincide with the opening of Indian Premier League (IPL). Star India has exclusive broadcast and digital rights for IPL.
“We will be launching Disney+ in India through Hotstar service on March 29. We see this as a great opportunity to use the proven platform of Hotstar to launch the new Disney+ service in one of the most populous countries and fastest-growing economies in the world,” Iger said.
Sources close to the development informed BestMediaInfo.com that Hotstar will be rebranded as Disney+Hotstar. “After the buyout, it is only logical for the Walt Disney Company to prefix its streaming service Hotstar, which is largest in India, with Disney+,” the source said.
After officially purchasing 21st Century Fox for $71.3 billion, Walt Disney had announced its plans to enter the OTT market with Disney+ and launched it in the US market on November 12, 2019.
