IPL playoffs see spike in viewership

Up from the ratings for the regular matches, the three playoff matches played in Week 21 garnered viewership upwards of 22,000 Impressions each

In the penultimate week of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the viewership ratings have seen a sharp increase, courtesy the three playoff matches played on May 24, 25 and 27, 2016.

According to data shared by BARC India (India | 4+ | Impressions´000s | Wk21 | only Live Match), the qualifier 1 match played between Gujarat Lions and Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 24 garnered 27219 Impressions. The eliminator match was played between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders, which gained a viewership of 22024 Impressions. Gujarat Lions and Sunrisers Hyderabad played the second qualifier which got 23056 Impressions.

These numbers are very much comparable to the top matches of the first six weeks of the tourney. In fact, the first qualifier match has now become the most viewed IPL match of the season. Till now, the inaugural match played between Mumbai Indians and Pune Supergiants on April 9 had 24448 Impressions.

As per the data shared by Sony, IPL recorded a 22 per cent growth over the last week with a viewership of 18626 Impressions, on an average. For seven weeks in a row, IPL stamped its supremacy in primetime on Indian television with Gross Impressions of 869,000 vis-a-vis the No. 2 channel at 391,000 Impressions and No. 3 channel at 343,000 Impressions.

357 million viewers watched IPL, establishing it as the biggest television event in India today.

The qualifier match achieved a cumulative reach of over 100 million.

All eyes are on the data for the final match viewership numbers for the tourney.
