GEC Watch: Star Plus tops Urban and U+R; Star Utsav remains at top in Rural
Star Plus has gained big in the rural market, possibly on the back of its annual property Star Parivaar Awards which was telecast in Week 22. BARC has given out data on basis of Urban, Rural and Urban+Rural

The Broadcast Audience Research Council, India (BARC), in Week 22 (May 28 to June 3) of 2016, has released three sets of data for the Hindi general entertainment channels. Along with the separate numbers for Urban and Rural market audience measurement data, the agency has also released an 'Urban+Rural' set of numbers, mapped on HSM (U+R): NCCS All: 4+ Individuals.
According to the viewership data released for the combined markets, Star Plus leads the flock with 710,956 Impressions, followed by Colors at No. 2 with 685,438 Impressions. Star India's FTA, Star Utsav, has miraculously climbed to No. 3 in the U+R markets with 526,064 Impressions, followed by Sony Pal at No. 4 with 525,502 Impressions. Zee TV stands at No. 5 with 524,824 Impressions.
The two Hindi GECs from Star India continued to top the urban and rural lists in Week 22. While Star Plus, Colors and Zee TV parked themselves in the top three positions, respectively, in the urban markets, the rural viewership brought Star Utsav, Sony Pal and Zee Anmol to the top in that order.
It must be noted that there are no numbers to compare the performance of the channels in U+R since BARC was rolling out data on the basis of Urban and Rural since Week 18.
Top Channels in Urban Markets
While Star Plus continued to top the flock in the urban markets with 465,665 Impressions, up from last week's 429,608 Impressions of last week, Colors was a close No. 2 with 456,104 Impressions, registering an increase from Week 21's 428,420 Impressions.
Zee TV stayed at No. 3 with 294,059 Impressions, marginally up from 291,806 of Week 21.
Life OK continues to be at No. 4 with 291,474 Impressions, against 270,565 Impressions that it garnered last week.
Sony SAB stood at No. 5 with 256,888 Impressions (240,562 Impressions last week).
Sony Entertainment Television saw a rise in numbers as it garnered 240,040 Impressions, up from last week's 233,351 Impressions.
Sony Pal remained at No. 7 with 128,739 Impressions, slightly more than last week's 121,712 Impressions. &TV at No. 8 got 119,527 Impressions (109,531 Impressions last week).
Star Utsav held its position at No. 9 with 114,881 Impressions (108,359 Impressions last week). Zee Anmol continued to trail at No. 10 with 99,308 Impressions, despite an increase from last week's 91,176 Impressions.
Top Programmes in Urban Markets
As per select data {HSM (Urban): NCCS All: Prime Time (1800 – 2330 hrs): 4+ Individuals}, Colors' Naagin remained the most viewed programme in urban markets despite a drop in numbers at 8055 Impressions (last week 8919 Impressions). This was the penultimate week of the most watched show of the genre. The show saw its finale on June 4 and 5.
Star Plus' Ye Hai Mohabbatein is at No. 2 with 7037 Impressions (last week 6805 Impressions).
Star Plus' Saath Nibhaana Saathiya remained at No. 3 with 6014 Impressions, despite further drop from last week's 6128 Impressions.
Zee TV's Kumkum Bhagya is at No. 4 with 6011 Impressions (last week 5676 Impressions).
Star Parivar Awards, telecast by Star Plus has gained them enough eyeballs with 5825 Impressions.

Top Channels in Rural Markets
In Week 22 of 2016, Star Utsav remained at the top. As per {HSM (Rural): NCCS All: 4+ Individuals} data, Star Utsav gained 411,183 Impressions, down from last week's 369,244 Impressions.
Sony Pal stood second with 396,763 Impressions, rise from 344,698 Impressions last week.
Zee Anmol, at No. 3 got 331,471 Impressions (last week 320,136 Impressions).
Surprisingly, Rishtey and Star Plus have moved up to get ahead of Zee TV. Rishtey at No. 4 got 269,190 Impressions (last week 228,257). Star Plus has garnered 245,291 Impressions, possibly on the back of the Star Parivaar Awards which was telecast in this week (last week 219,739).
Zee TV stood at No. 6 with 230,765 Impressions, marginally up from last week's 232,232 Impressions.
Colors remained at No. 7 with 229,334 Impressions (last week 216,100 Impressions).
Life OK climbed one spot up to be at No. 8 with 168,745 Impressions, followed by Big Magic at No. 9 with 157,099.
Sony SAB at the trailing end garnered 115,260 Impressions.
Top Programmes in Rural Markets
As per BARC India {HSM (Rural): NCCS All: Prime Time (1800 – 2330 hrs): 4+ Individuals}, witnessing an increase in viewership, Zee Anmol's Jodha Akbar stood at No. 1 with 6780 Impression, last week's 5631 Impressions.
Star Utsav's Saath Nibhaana Saathiya is at No. 2 with 5567 Impressions, up from 5376 Impressions of Week 21.
Colors' Naagin is at No. 3 with 5099 Impressions, rise from Week 21's 4979 Impressions.
Zee Anmol's Bandini at No. 4 got 5096 Impressions, up from last week's 4325 Impressions.
Zee TV's Kumkum Bhagya has entered the list with 4900 Impressions.
