The win comes following the global realignment of the GE media account in which OMD retained the business for the US market but lost to MEC in the rest of the global markets, including India

publive-imageThe General Electric India (GE India) media planning and buying account is moving to MEC India, according to informed industry sources. It will also handle search engine responsibilities. The win comes following GE, the global energy, tech and finance conglomerate, deciding to split the media account and hire WPP's MEC to handle media planning and buying outside of the US after a recent review.

When contacted, the MEC India spokesperson said he was not in a position to comment. Industry sources estimate the India media account to be worth around Rs 50-60 crore annually.

The win for MEC comes primarily at the cost of Omnicom Group's OMD, which was the incumbent globally on the GE media business except in China and Vietnam which were handled by Publicis Groupe's Starcom.

MEC will also handle search engine media responsibilities globally. GE spends in excess of $200 million on media worldwide each year.

GE's primary creative agency, Omnicom's BBDO, is not affected by the realignment.
