Sets up Times Travel Academy; to recognise achievements in travel and tourism industry.

Times Group has launched “Times Travel Honours” to recognise achievements in travel and tourism industry. The award will cover the entire travel and hospitality space, including airlines, railways, water transport, road passenger transport, tourism boards, fleet taxi services, ticketing firms, travel operators and backend service providers.

Indian Travel and Tourism Economy ranks 14th in the absolute size worldwide as per The World Travel & Tourism report for 2010 in which 180 countries were evaluated. India is one of the fastest growing markets for tourism sector and ranks 5th in Long term growth. The contribution of Travel and Tourism to GDP is expected to be USD 187.3 by 2019.

The group has set up Times Travel Academy and has brought on board 100 well known professionals from the industry who will judge nominations in 20 broad categories for the awards. Leela Palace Hotel’s Chairman Capt. C. P. Krishnan Nair will chair the academy.

The academy will conduct an annual travel survey to gauge the pulse of the industry and has plans to come out with a journal on trends and news relating to $ 67.3 billion tourism sector.

Winners in Three categories i.e. Best Airline, Hotel and Tour Operator will be adjudged through public voting who can vote via internet and SMS.

Innovations are crucial for the growth of the industry and innovators have the power to re-shape the Indian travel industry. A maverick, who has made a significant contribution to enable greater inbound travel, positioned India as a favourite tourist destination, improved infrastructure, developed manpower and protected environment would be recognised for the contribution made to the sector.

Outstanding achievement of individuals who have changed the course of the Indian travel industry through regulatory changes, business initiatives or sheer determination and will power will be recognised for top honours at these annual awards. Their nomination will be judged on the impact created in the Indian travel industry over the previous years.

The Times Travel Academy will also conduct and participate in a series of round tables to discuss pressing issues of the Indian travel industry, as well as provide their inputs in releasing a white paper on the key trends and issues in the Indian travel industry.

Academy membership will be on invitation basis only in year one. In subsequent years it will be basis the consideration of the Academy.
