Ayodhya Live: Who Gets What Among Hindi Channels

Aaj Tak leads with a big margin followed by Star News; a surprise package by Zee News and IBN7.

publive-imageOn 30th September, 2010, three parties were fighting for the land in Ayodhya and on the same day six top Hindi news channels were fighting for the maximum viewership share.

News anchors on all prominent Hindi news channels were trying to decode the Ayodhya verdict in easier language for their viewers and were giving live telecast from the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court. The media scene was no different from the one shown in Peepli Live.  Had these scenes been broadcast before the release of Peepli live, Aamir Khan would have loved to add them in his movie.

Alike other wars, this war of TV news channels, also had a clear winner. Aaj Tak came out as a clear leader on the day of Ayodhya verdict with the maximum market share of 29% among top 6 Hindi news channels followed by Star News (22%). The No.1 news channel from past few weeks India TV got a tiff competition from Zee News in 3 TGs to be pushed at No.4. Refer to the graph below:

There were a few surprises during the verdict hour between 4 pm to 6 pm where Aaj Tak increased the lead over Star News and reached the peak market share of 31% and IBN7 became the 3rd most watched news channel in 2 major TGs. Refer to the graph below:

Not only this, the judgment week was also led by Aaj Tak while Star News and India TV were struggling for 2nd spot. Refer to the graph below:

Analyzing the TAM data for Ayodhya Verdict week, a few known industry experts accepted that Aaj Tak always takes the lead if it comes to serious news and live coverage but at the same time they were surprised that why the channel did not stick to its strong part to maintain its leadership. The experts agreed that India TV might not have serious viewers and it might have been the market leader for few weeks due to recreation of news drama. The experts voiced together by praising the consistent growth of IBN7.
