publive-imageAfter witnessing the communal riots in 1992, Ayodhya, on 30th September 2010 witnessed the media riots. This time the TV news channels were fighting for the maximum eyeballs. Besides the historic Allahabad High Court's verdict, news channels were another beneficiary with maximum viewership on that day. Not only this, the news channels were favourite for a week before the final verdict as the honourable Supreme Court had differed the verdict for 4 days and news channels kept building up around the issue. The share of English news genre in the entire week (TAM Wk 40) was as high as 0.61% which is 33% more than last week's (TAM Wk 39) 0.46%.

Now, almost after a week, the TV rating agency TAM has delivered its verdict on the channel shares around the Ayodhya verdict. CNN-IBN has come out as India's most watched English News Channel in the entire week where the Ayodhya judgement was delivered. CNN-IBN leads across audience groups during the Ayodhya Verdict Week followed by Times Now at No.2, NDTV 24x7 at No.3, Headlines Today at No.4 and NewsX at No.5. Refer to the chart below:

Even on the day of the Ayodhya verdict, CNN-IBN captured the maximum eyeballs across audience groups closely followed by Times Now across TGs like CS 15+, CS AB 15+, CS 15-44, CS AB 15-44, CS 25+, CS 25-44, CS AB 25-44, CS M 25+, CS A M 25+. At the same time Times Now has taken a lead in case of one TG CS M 25+ AB on the verdict day. Also, in TGs like CS A 15+, CS A 15-44, CS AB 15-44, CS A 25+, CS A 25-44 and CS AB 25-44, NewsX has surprised Headlines Today to become No.4 English news channel. Refer to the chart below:

The latest viewership figures reveal that CNN-IBN is the No.1 English News Channel in the latest 8 weeks followed by Times Now. (Source: TAM, Channel Share, Market: All India, TG CS AB 15+, Period: Wk 33 – 40'10, 0600-2400). However, the TV news viewers prefer watching the channel with credible, responsible and accountable reporting when it comes to events of national significance.
