Doordarshan National succeeded in bringing forth the challenges faced by women from across the country in the first season of its talk show, 'Stree Shakti', which got over recently. With its Season 2 now on air, the channel seeks to highlight stories of excellence and achievements with a new anchor, Shruti Ulfat.
'Stree Shakti' Season 2 airs every Saturday and Sunday at 9 pm and showcases stories of courage by women, who have carved a niche for themselves despite all odds.
Tackling difficult issues like gang rapes, domestic violence, gender violence, female infanticide, acid attacks and many such harrowing situations, each of the women featured in 'Stree Shakti' Season 1 had won over the viewers.
The first episode of Season 2, which aired on May 30, showed the story of Padmashree awardee Phul Basan Devi from Chhattisgarh, who was forced to fight for her very existence after she was married off as a child in a poverty stricken tribal area. As a social activist, not only did she rise above the hell of ignorance and lack of education, but also managed to empower herself and thousands of women like her through unique self help groups. Today, she is a role model for all the women in her area.
This was followed by the story of Ridwana Sanam on May 31, a lady from a small village in Kashmir where her very existence was denied by her own mother, who refused to accept her as a daughter and brought her up as a son, without giving her any concession for being a son. Ridwana decided to take her destiny in her own hands and moved out of her home and struggled in Delhi to become an ace physiotherapist, someone who lives her life on her own terms.
Season 2 will feature many such stories of exemplary courage of women who were raped and left to die on the railway tracks, disabled women who fought the pain and won many battles, issues related with sex workers, mental illness and refugees who received help from the government.
Actor and the show's host for Season 2, Shruti Ulfat, said, “Shaken, emotional, inspired are the three words that instantly come to my find after shooting with these courageous women in 'Stree Shakti'. I feel so much more evolved after knowing their stories. This season, I feel is certainly going to touch the hearts of the viewers and bring them closer to us.”
Scheduled for telecast every Saturday and Sunday at 9 pm, 'Stree Shakti' this season will bring hundreds of case studies through its one-hour episodes, inspiring the call for action that was started from its inception.
