Reddit partners with Google to train AI models

Social media platform Reddit announced in its blog, its partnership with Google to make its content available for training the search engine’s AI models.

It said in a post, “With this partnership, and via our Data API, we’re ushering in new ways for Reddit content to be displayed across Google products by providing programmatic access to new, constantly evolving, and dynamic public posts, comments, etc., on Reddit.”

Google also revealed in their blog post, this new Cloud partnership using Vertex AI to enhance search and other capabilities on the Reddit platform.

The blog notes that this partnership will make it easier for people to find, discover, and engage in content and communities on Reddit that are most relevant to them.

“All of this builds on our existing partnership with Google Cloud to integrate new AI-powered capabilities to improve Reddit and help achieve our mission of bringing community, belonging, and empowerment to everyone in the world,” it added.

The platform noted that this expanded partnership does not change Reddit's Data API Terms or Developer Terms.

Media reports note that the contract with Google is worth about $60 million per year. This move is a way for Reddit to generate new revenue amid competition for advertising dollars from the likes of TikTok and Meta Platforms.

The deal follows on the heels of Reddit announcing that it has filed a registration statement on Form S-1 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission relating to a proposed initial public offering of its Class A common stock. The number of shares to be offered and the price range for the proposed offering have not yet been determined.
