OpenAI's new tool Sora can turn text into one-minute-long videos

OpenAI has revealed a tool named Sora, capable of generating one-minute-long short videos instantaneously in response to written commands.

Sora possesses the ability to discern the user's preferences regarding the style and ambience of the video, such as "cinematic style, shot on 35mm film, vivid colours," and accordingly adjusts lighting, colour schemes, and camera angles. The platform can generate videos with resolutions of up to 1920x1080 and 1080x1920, catering to various genres and themes including fantasy, sci-fi, horror, comedy, and more.

Following the announcement, numerous users have inquired about examples of Sora's capabilities from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. For instance, one user suggested Altman create a video featuring "a wizard adorned in a pointed hat and a blue robe with white stars, casting a spell that emits lightning from his hand while holding an old tome in the other." Another user requested the OpenAI CEO to produce a video by Sora depicting "Two golden retrievers podcasting atop a mountain," to which Altman obliged by sharing the result.

Kunal Shah, the founder of Cred, also requested Sam Altman to produce a Sora-generated video depicting "A bicycle race set upon the ocean, featuring various animals as athletes riding bicycles, all captured from a drone's aerial perspective."

Sora remains unreleased to the public, with OpenAI disclosing minimal details regarding its construction. However, the company has made it accessible for red teaming purposes, aiding in the identification of potential flaws within the AI system. Additionally, Sora is available to visual artists, designers, and filmmakers, serving as a platform for soliciting feedback on the model's performance, as per a statement from the company.

Many people on social media have already shown concern about its misuse. Several people believe that it has the potential to emerge as a swift and cost-effective method for propagating online disinformation, further complicating the discernment of authenticity amidst the vast expanse of the internet.
