Business owners who are looking for ways to save money may search for bargains on company tools and equipment.
In some cases, this isn’t a big deal. For example, there’s nothing wrong with buying cheap pads of paper or a mid-quality conference table.
However, when business owners apply frugality to company devices like smartphones, tablets, and handheld scanners, that’s when things can go wrong.
Out of all the possible tools a business might need, here’s why mobile devices need to be of top quality.
You have specific needs that can’t be compromised
No matter what type of business you run, you have specific needs when it comes to devices. Maybe you need something that can wirelessly transfer files to your main desktop computer, or perhaps you need all of your employees to use the same application for private messaging.
Whatever it is, there’s probably a device that meets your needs. For instance, fleet maintenance teams aren’t always technically-inclined, so business owners give them devices that are user-friendly out of the box.
Instead of choosing your company devices based on price, select them based on your needs. It doesn’t make sense to buy devices that don’t support your needs as a business. For example, if you need iPhones to use an industry-specific application that only works on iOS, and you settle for a Samsung device running Android, you’ll have to use a different application and hope it works out. That’s not efficient or smart.
Poor quality devices malfunction more often
You’ve probably heard the line, “you get what you pay for.” It’s usually true. Most of the time, if you pay more, you get better quality. When you cut corners and buy cheap things, you’ll get short-term benefits, but there will also be long-term consequences.
You wouldn’t sell poor-quality items to customers, so why would you force your employees to use low-quality devices? Your team members might not be a risk in the sense that they won’t leave you a scathing review on Yelp, but they will become frustrated and possibly even bitter when forced to use cheap devices. Slow processors and spotty internet connectivity are enough to hinder workflows and increase your costs.
High-quality devices can be replaced with insurance
Even though there are plenty of reasons to buy good devices, you might be thinking it’s still better to buy cheap devices because if they break, you’ll lose less money than if you had broken an expensive device. Insurance makes that a null argument because in most cases, you can get a new device under your policy.
All devices are subject to damage
Are you holding out until someone invents an indestructible device? Do you think it’s not worth buying better devices just because they might break? It’s better to buy high-quality devices and get what you need because no device is indestructible. If you’re holding out for this form of perfection, you’ll be waiting a long time.
You won’t find an indestructible smartphone, but you can come close. YouTubers are constantly buying phones just to perform drop tests. For instance, ">this guy did a drop test with the iPhone 14 Pro and the titanium iPhone 15 Pro, and the results were surprising. After several drops, the titanium phone wasn’t even functional, while the 14 Pro was cracked all over, but still usable.
If this makes you wary of buying iPhones for your business, don’t read too much into it because most of these drop tests don’t simulate real situations. Sure, people will drop smartphones and tablets. That’s guaranteed. However, the way the phones are dropped in these tests is intentional and it often takes numerous drops from unnaturally high places to cause any damage.
Employee productivity matters most
Above all, you want productive employees because that’s how your business will stay profitable. If you buy cheap tablets, scanners, or smartphones for your team, their efficiency will suffer. For instance, they won’t be able to complete tasks as quickly as they could if they had a better device. They’ll also experience a build-up of frustration for being forced to use subpar tools.
Do your business and your team a favor and get high-quality mobile devices from the start. You’ll probably need to replace or repair them as time goes by, but that’s unavoidable.
When you give your team everything they need to perform at their best, you’ll see a noticeable difference in the results they get for your company.
