CCPA penalises Byju's over IAS ad; latter set to appeal

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has fined edtech platform Byju’s Rs 10 lakh for allegedly disseminating false and deceptive advertisements related to its online IAS (Indian Administrative Service) coaching program.

According to the directive issued on November 23, Byju’s was unable to provide substantiating evidence for its assertions of a consistent rise in candidate selections in UPSC civil services examinations (CSE), purportedly increasing from 62 in 2013 to 295 in 2020.

As per the directive, the CCPA has mandated the company to remit a penalty of Rs 10 lakh and submit a compliance report within 15 days from the issuance of the order. The company is also instructed to cease the advertisements.

In a statement given by the company to the media, Byju’s expressed disagreement with the order. It said, “We observe that CCPA has imposed fines on various education/ed-tech institutions in this matter. We respectfully disagree with the findings in the order and plan to appeal, as we believe the advertisements are not misleading."

The spokesperson further said, “We will seek to support this stance with pertinent evidence before the appellate authority."

The appellate authority in this case is the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC).
