Generative AI platforms increase focus on Indian regional languages

Known best for generating responses on the basis of the prompts given by the users, Generative AI platforms such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google Bard and Adobe Firefly, have now enabled users to generate images and text effects using some of the internationally known native languages from various countries.

In the Indian context, these languages include Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Malayalam, Bengali, Kannada, Urdu, etc. for Google Bard; Gujarati, Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu for Adobe Firefly; and Hindi, Marathi, Urdu, Telugu, Bengali, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Gujarati, Bhojpuri, Punjabi and more for OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Interestingly, AI, for quite some time now, has been known for fuelling innovation in not just one spectrum such as text generation, customisation or more but actually for complementing localisation and that too in regional languages which happens to be a sweet spot for all the large language model based APIs.

That being said, Google in its I/O event threw light on certain features which will be available for usage in the Indian regional languages- listening aloud to Bard’s responses or even changing its tone in addition to users being able to pin and rename conversations to increase productivity.

However, some of the newly announced features, such as the move to bring the capabilities of Google Lens into Bard, to enable users to ask for information about an image or generate captions to find relevant results, which are currently available in English language and will soon expand to the other newer languages on the platform.

Adobe’s family of creative generative AI models, which includes Firefly, has globally expanded to support text prompts in over 100 languages to enable users across the world to generate assets on the Firefly website and in Photoshop, making these two of Adobe’s most successful beta releases in the company’s history.  Firefly now supports text prompts in over 100 languages, including eight Indian regional languages like Gujarati, Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu.

Having launched in March, Adobe Firefly has already been integrated into Photoshop, Express and Illustrator, helping customers build their creative confidence by removing the barriers between imagination and blank pages.

But OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which had earlier instilled a new and maverick wave for Generative AI with the launch of GPT-3, has witnessed a decline for the first time in website visits, which suggests a potential decrease in consumer interest in the backdrop of growing competition, better alternatives as well as AI hallucination arising out of inaccurate results owing to data limitations.

However, with the currently prevalent increased focus on making regional languages available on the various Generative AI APIs, it is clear that Indians living across the country can use the AI chatbot for their work in the language they are comfortable in and thereby register more efficiency and productivity.
