NDTV will remain a credible and independent global news network with a clear ‘Lakshman rekha’ between management and editorial, said business tycoon Gautam Adani, Chairman and Founder of Adani Group.
In an exclusive interview with India Today Group Editorial Director Raj Chengappa, Adani said, “You can endlessly debate and interpret each and every word of what I am saying, as has been done by many. But my fundamental point is that the proof of the pudding is in the eating.”
Adani then asked for some time before everyone starts judging him and his company for interfering with NDTV’s editorial policy.
Last week, NDTV founders Prannoy Roy and his wife Radhika Roy decided to sell 27.26% out of their remaining 32.26% shareholding in the news broadcaster to Adani Group.
With this development, Adani Group has now become the single largest shareholder in New Delhi Television (NDTV) with a 64.7% stake after first buying out a company backed by the founders and then acquiring more shares from the open market.
Announcing their decision to sell their stakes to Adani Group last week, Radhika and Prannoy Roy said, “With mutual agreement, we have decided to divest most of our shares in NDTV to the AMG Media Network. Since the Open Offer was launched, our discussions with Mr Gautam Adani have been constructive; all the suggestions we made were accepted by him positively and with openness.”
“Mr Adani has invested in a brand that is synonymous with Trust, Credibility and Independence, and we are hopeful that he will preserve these values and expand upon them with all the responsibility required of a leader of an organisation of this nature. We look forward to watching NDTV, and its entire extraordinary team, delivering the next phase of growth, one that India can be proud of,” Roys added.
