Dyson, Mazda among other brands pull out of Twitter for showcasing ads alongside objectionable content

A bunch of international advertisers have pulled out their advertisements from the microblogging platform Twitter, owing to their ads being showcased alongside objectionable content, as per reports.

According to Reuters, the ads of a number of brands were being displayed alongside tweets that are promoting child pornography, sexual abuse of children on the microblogging platform.

According to research from cybersecurity group Ghost Data, about child sex abuse online, the ads of brands like Walt Disney Co, NBCUniversal, and Coca-Cola Co, were among those which appeared on profiles linked to such content.

Ghost Data’s research also highlighted around 500 accounts that were violating social media guidelines and were sharing child sexual abuse content. The group also said that Twitter failed to remove more than 70% of these accounts during the period of their study.

Speaking about the situation, David Maddocks, Brand President at Cole Haan- an American fashion company told Reuters, "Either Twitter is going to fix this, or we'll fix it by any means we can, which includes not buying Twitter ads.”

A Forbes spokesperson was quoted as saying, "Twitter needs to fix this problem ASAP, and until they do, we are going to cease any further paid activity on Twitter.”

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, who is currently fighting Twitter in court for walking out of a $44 billion deal put out a tweet calling the situation ‘Extremely concerning’.

However, Twitter spokesperson Celeste Carswell in a media statement said the company has zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation and is investing more resources dedicated to child safety, including hiring for new positions to write policy and implement solutions.

She also said, Twitter is working closely with its advertising clients and partners to investigate and take steps to prevent the situation from reoccurring.

A few months ago, another study by news platform The Verge highlighted that Twitter has problems in identifying child abuse content. It must be noted that Twitter has a ban in place on content depicting child exploitation.

However, the platform permits discussing of adult content on the platform, which comprises 13% of all content on the platform, as per Reuters.
