Google News Initiative Training Network in India to now be available in five new languages

The Google News Initiative Training Network in India, which is run in partnership with DataLeads, has announced an expansion with the inclusion of five new regional languages- Punjabi, Assamese, Gujarati, Odia and Malayalam.

The program by Google News Initiative and DataLeads supports journalists and newsrooms who want to pick up on digital skills to verify and tackle online misinformation.

As per Google India, first initiated in 2018, the program has organised over 700 workshops and trained 39,000+ journalists, media educators, fact-checkers and journalism students from over 2300 newsrooms and media colleges in at least 10 languages, till today.

Additionally, Google India said in a blog post that the Network will also launch its Fact-Check Academy and induct 100 new trainers to help newsrooms and journalists to combat climate-change misinformation by verifying misleading data and claims that include false numbers.

The selected candidates for the Network’s new initiative will join the three-day train-the-trainer program with fully supported residency starting August 3 and August 24. While the deadline to apply for the program is July 30, preference will be given to applicants with prior data or science journalism experience and those looking to undergo the training program in the five-newly added languages.

The training boot camp will have sessions from global verification experts and Indian fact-checkers who will train the selected candidates on a curriculum built in consultation with the Science Journalists Association of India, Amity University, Jagran Lakecity University and OP Jindal Global University.
