The Indian EdTech industry is believed to have received $16.1 billion in VC funding, a 32x increase from the $ 500 million received in 2010. The growth spurt in this industry is driven largely by the K-12 segment, higher education, and upskilling categories.
As per industry reports, education from grades 1 to 12 has increased 6.3 times in 2022 from the base of 2019.
Students belonging to different income categories and social classes have been able to access quality education through these platforms because of their affordability, accessibility, and flexibility.
EdTech’s growth is quickly shifting focus from classroom-based learning to online learning. Mobile devices, laptops, and tablets have made virtual learning much more effortless. All you need to do now is go online and enjoy a feature-rich learning experience.
Gen Z
Children born between the late 1990s and early 2000s are called Gen Z. These students are currently in middle and high school. Gen Z kids are digital natives, having spent practically their entire lives surrounded by technologies that are essential for living and learning. It is about time we focus on the needs and preferences of Gen Z to understand what motivates them to bring their A-game to education.
The Survey
Brainly, India's number one doubt solving app for kids and parents, ran an online survey to find out what inspires Gen Z to study for extra hours. Nearly 4,000 Gen Z students were asked about their employment goals, and the results revealed a significant shift in how they view wages, status, social impact, and other factors.
For Gen Z, a career is far more important than it was for their parents. Then Gen Z gives importance to salary, social status, social influence, and more. This is a key finding of the survey.
77.8% of students answered that preparation for a future career was more important to them. When it came to choosing future employment, 39% of high school students valued high-paying professions, while 36.2% of middle school students picked high-paying jobs. In the future, 54.1% of middle school students said they would be fine working remotely. Remote employment is preferred by 50.8% of high school students.
The most important criterion in choosing a job, according to 52.8% of all students polled, is the wage. 35.2% of all students indicated the job title was more important than the pay.
Gen Z values family
According to 56.1% of respondents, the key motivation for students to work was to aid their families, while 49.6% of high school students desired to earn money to save for the future. While 41% of respondents said they intended to gain money for personal reasons, 63% felt their current education is preparing them for their desired careers.
Need to focus on Gen Z
Gen Z is the future workforce; therefore, educators must pay attention to their voices and grasp the role that education should play in preparing this generation for the future. They must figure out how to provide them with the skills and experiences they need to improve the working environment for future generations. As a result, it is critical to prioritise education through easy, accessible technologies and instructional resources that Gen Z can trust.
The survey revealed that students of this generation are career-focused and give a lot of importance to salary and status. They are embarking on their education journey with higher expectations than previous generations of students.
Part of this shift may be attributed to the fact that they have more access to knowledge than previous generations. They are already well-versed in current events, music, popular culture, and worldwide trends by the time they reach higher education. They are very aware of the world around them and are already carving their place in it.
Generation Z is driving the transformation of education. They are a driving force in the development of new learning technologies, teaching methods, and resource access. And they are demonstrating that education is moving in the direction of a more learner-centric environment in which students take charge of their destinies.
