Tata Group reveals how some of its brands got their names

Indian multinational conglomerate Tata group took to social media to reveal how some of its many brands got their names. The MNC used William Shakespeare’s oft-quoted phrase- ‘What’s in a name?’, and went on to ask users to ‘Swipe to find out’.

Tata Group wrote on their Instagram post, “At some point, you have probably wondered why some of the brands you use every day are called what they are.”

The MNC then revealed the secret behind the names of brands like Vistara, Tanishq, Croma and Amã Stays & Trails.

As per Tata, the name of their airline brand Vistara was derived from the Sanskrit word Vistaar’ which means a ‘limitless expanse’. The group said it was chosen as “the name conjures images of a window-seat view of endless blue skies.”

Similarly, for Amã Stays & Trails, the word Amã too comes from the Sanskrit word ‘अम:’, which means ‘at home’. Tata said they couldn’t think of anything better as the name as the brand offers to create a unique homestay experience.

Further, the name of their jewellery brand, Tanishq, is derived from the combination of two words – ‘Tan’ meaning ‘body’ and ‘Nishq’ meaning ‘a gold ornament’. Tata said that the name ‘rings of craftsmanship, exclusive design and quality.’

Finally, the group revealed that the name of their retail chain of consumer electronics and durables, Croma, was decided on a flight. There were a lot of options but Croma, which means ‘purity of colour, the brightest a hue can be’, was the name which stuck with them and they went ahead with it.
