HUL ranks # 1 in India Access to Nutrition Spotlight Index 2020

Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) has been ranked joint #1 in the India Access to Nutrition Spotlight Index 2020 for its approach to nutrition. Hindustan Unilever and Nestlé India share the rank with an overall score of 6.9.

The high score underlines HUL’s various initiatives to integrate nutrition into its business model.  Ever since the 2016 India Access to Nutrition Spotlight Index, HUL has improved its ranking (from #2) and its score in several Index categories.

In the Access to Nutrition Initiative (ATNI) report, HUL is lauded for its clear and well-structured nutrition strategy in India. HUL’s active support for FSSAI’s Eat Right Initiative, Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP) linked reformulation approach on reducing levels of salt, sugar and saturated fats in products, it’s pricing strategy to improve affordability of products, its unique product distribution initiative (Project Shakti) as well as the company’s initiative to drive healthier diets and lifestyles for its employees were called out as best practices.

Out of the seven categories on which the companies were assessed, HUL leads the way in four categories — governance, accessibility, lifestyle and nutrition labelling. This recognition is a strong endorsement of the steps taken by HUL with respect to its nutrition governance, practices and disclosures.

It is the company’s belief that corporates like HUL have the scale to play a key role in helping the country reduce the triple burden of malnourishment — undernourishment, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity. HUL will continue to support access to Nutrition Foundation and its stand that all stakeholders, especially the food and beverage industry, have an important role to play in helping people improve their health and wellbeing.

ATNI is an international not-for-profit organisation. It publishes independent and comprehensive analysis and commentary on food and beverage companies’ efforts to improve consumers’ access to nutritious foods and beverages, both globally and in spotlight countries. ATNI collaborates with all relevant stakeholders, including the investment community to ensure the Indexes are a useful tool as they engage with and invest in food and beverage companies.

The Access to Nutrition Foundation (ATNF) is currently funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the UK's Department for International Development (DFID), the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DGIS) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The index has gained widespread recognition globally as an effective public accountability tool.
