On January 17, 2020 Nirmala Sitharaman, Finance Minister met members of the executive body of the News Broadcasters Federation (NBF). In the meeting, the NBF requested the Government to treat TV news channels on a par with the print industry for GST.  Presently, 5% GST is applicable on print media but the news broadcasters are charged 18%.

In the meeting, NBF President Arnab Goswami highlighted the need for a parity given the similarity in the business model and the importance of TV news broadcasting in the country.

The Finance Minister accepted a copy of the recommendation of NBF and assured the members that she would look into the matter.

The NBF was represented in the meeting by Arnab Goswami, Vice-Presidents Jagi M. Panda and Sanjive Narain, and Secretary-General R. Jai Krishna.
