The Hindu Group has named Suresh Nambath as the new Editor of The Hindu with effect from March 1, 2019. Presently the National Editor of the English daily, Nambath will succeed Mukund Padmanabhan, who has been Editor of the newspaper since March 2016 and who will retire on February 28, 2019.

Nambath joined The Hindu as Principal Correspondent covering Tamil Nadu politics in October 1996; served as Tamil Nadu Bureau Chief between July 2006 and February 2012; and was promoted to Senior Associate Editor and Coordinating Editor in March 2014. He has been the National Editor of The Hindu since October 2015 and deputising for the Editor in his absence.

Padmanabhan, who was the Editor of Business Line, took over as Editor of The Hindu in March 2016 following Malini Parthasarathy’s resignation in January that year. Parthasarathy served as Editor for 11 months before stepping down. Following her resignation, Nambath was acting Editor of The Hindu until Mukund’s appointment.

In 2011, the Board of The Hindu Group appointed Siddharth Varadarajan as Editor of The Hindu. He was the first Editor in nearly 50 years who didn’t belong to the Kasturi family that owns the group. However, Varadarajan soon resigned in October 2013, with N Ravi taking over from him.
