Contrary to the increasing perception of degrowth in print medium, the Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI) said that the registered publications witnessed a growth rate of 3.58 per cent in 2016-17. The total claimed circulation of publications during the year was 48,80,89,490 where in Hindi was at 23,89,75,773; English was at 5,65,77,000 and Urdu was at 3,24,27,005.
RNI, in its ‘Press in India 2016-17’ report, said that the largest number of publications registered in any Indian language was Hindi followed by English. There were 4007 new publications registered across the country during 2016-17. Uttar Pradesh topped the list of largest number of registered publications followed by Maharashtra.
Dainik Bhaskar was the largest circulated multi-edition daily with 47,36,785 copies in 2016-17 while The Times of India was close second with 42,68,703 copies, according to the annual RNI report.
The largest circulated daily was ‘Ananda Bazar Patrika’, Bengali, Kolkata with 11,16,428 copies while the second largest circulated daily was ‘The Times of India’, English, Delhi with 9,56,054 copies. The largest circulated Hindi daily was ‘Punjab Kesari’, Jalandhar with 7,14,888 copies.
The largest circulated periodical was ‘The Sunday Times of India’, English/Weekly edition, Delhi with 8,35,269 copies. The largest circulated periodical in Malayalam was ‘Vanitha’, Malayalam/Fortnightly edition, Kottayam with 6,47,104 copies.
