As the News Broadcasters Association is gearing up for the election of its President and other office bearers, Arnab Goswami’s Republic TV has sought reforms in the association’s set up. A board meeting of NBA is scheduled on September 19, 2017 where the board could elect its next President.
It may be noted that the President position is lying vacant after India Today Group CEO Ashish Bagga resigned from the company. Bagga had stepped into this role after Ashok Venkatramani, Former CEO, ABP News Network was elected to be the President and resigned shortly after.
BestMediaInfo has a copy of the letter sent to the association today, pointing out the practices which need change.
Republic TV, in its letter to the association has expressed concerns over the office bearers’ selection process and other policies and processes. The channel had approached the association for being accorded membership and the same was granted on August 16, 2017.
Pointing out the issues in the practices followed by the association, the letter mentioned that the Charter of NBA about electing only seven permanent and members and only two permanent directors is unjustified and must change with time.
Another issue raised by the channel is that since there is a mandate of completing six months into the association before being eligible to be nominated in the elections is also not right. The channel has pointed out that such a provision keeps the new member out of the election procedure.
Also, the office bearers at NBA are ‘selected’ by the President with consensus of the permanent members (which is restricted to seven), and not by election. This is also pointed out by Republic TV, demanding that there should be open election for ‘election’ of office bearers.
