NBA intimates TRAI of Republic's 'dual feed' locations

In a letter dated May 26, the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) had written to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) intimating about the exact locations of the cable networks that are running Republic TV on multiple frequencies.

This letter was in response to TRAI’s letter, dated May 25 which was addressed to NBA by Anil Kumar Pathak, Senior Research Officer, TRAI, “requesting to provide a clear list of those MSOs along with their area of operation who are re-transmitting the said channel on dual LCN under different genres.”

NBA had specified that the channel is running on dual frequencies on a cable network in Delhi (within English news and Hindi news genres) and Chennai.

Initially, NBA had written to TRAI on May 11, pointing out the alleged infractions by Republic TV by running the channel on multiple frequencies.

In yet another letter to TRAI, TV Today Network has pointed out that Republic TV’s statement given to the Delhi HC denies that the channel has been placed in different genres. The letter mentioned one VK Digital Cable Operator in Chennai that is running the channel on dual locations.

The writ petition was dismissed on the basis of the statement given by Republic TV. The letter further mentioned that the same order of the High Court had also allowed the TRAI to seek redressal if there are any grievances. TV Today Network, in its letter, mentioned, “It appears that in spite of the statement made in the Court, Republic TV persists in its default.”

Claiming that the Republic TV appears defiant in the face of a categorical statement recorded by them in the Court, the network has requested TRAI to take ‘peremptory’ action against Republic TV, since TRAI is an industry regulator and is responsible for ensuring that the regulations are well obeyed by the industry thereby ensuring fair play.

TV Today network has also mentioned that, if not taken immediate action, the industry players will be forced to take the channel to court again.
