The data released by Broadcast Audiences Research Council of India (BARC India) for Week 8 was mapped on the basis of the updated universe estimates. According to the new universe estimates, the total TV viewership has increased by 18 per cent. Total TV Impressions have grown from 22.7 billion in Week 7 to 26.7 billion Impressions in Week 8.

The Hindi general entertainment channels (GEC) genre, which is the highest revenue earning category, has not been affected much in terms of rankings. While an analysis will have to wait a few more weeks to map a trend, the rankings in Week 8 of BARC 2017 show that the universe expansion was quite uniform. It is also like that no one channel stands to gain or lose explicitly in this new system.

So, very much like Week 7, Star Plus and Colors remained the No. 1 and 2 channels, respectively, in the combined U+R and Urban markets, while Rishtey and Zee Anmol topped the list in Rural. While Zee TV has improved its numbers (and ranking) over last week, they are still very much in line with the long-term trend of the past. Sony Entertainment Television too stayed put at No. 7, No. 3 and No.9 position in the U+R, Urban and Rural markets, respectively.

The performance of individual programmes is also quite similar to the earlier trends.

Top channels in U+R markets

Star Plus retains No. 1 with 712.076 million Impressions, a huge gain from last week. Colors too witnessed an increase in eyeballs as it garnered 640.525 million Impressions. Rishtey stayed at No. 3 with 537.507 million Impressions. At No. 4, Sony Pal too witnessed huge gains as it garnered 523.334 million Impressions. Zee TV slipped to No. 5 with 508.260 million Impressions followed by its sister channel Zee Anmol with 504.534 million Impressions. Sony Entertainment Television stood at No. 7 with 467.421 million Impressions. At No. 8, Star Utsav garnered 448.900 million Impressions. Sony SAB stood at No. 9 with 390.487 million Impressions while Life OK trailed at No. 10 with 390.466 million Impressions.

As per select data {HSM (Urban): NCCS All: Prime Time (1800 – 2330 hrs): 4+ Individuals}, Colors' Naagin Season 2 retained its lead with 12.073 million Impressions. Zee TV's Kumkum Bhagya was at No. 2 with 11.349 million Impressions. At No. 3, Naagin Season 2 on Rishtey garnered 11.146 million Impressions. Sony TV's The Kapil Sharma Show stood at No. 4 with 10.121 million Impressions. Colors' Shani stood at No. 5 got 9.055 million Impressions.

Top channels in Urban markets

Star Plus retained its leadership as it garnered 476.677 million Impressions. At No. 2, Colors garnered 429.120 million Impressions. Sony Entertainment Television stayed put at No. 3 with 324.587 million Impressions. Zee TV climbed to No. 4 with 281.062 million Impressions while Sony SAB stayed put at No. 5 with 269.453 million Impressions. Life OK slipped to No. 6 with 236.276 million Impressions followed by Sony Pal which garnered 149.345 million Impressions. At No. 8, &TV garnered 135.671 million Impressions.  At No. 9, Rishtey garnered 127.935 million Impressions and Star Utsav stood at No. 10 with 106.518 million Impressions.

As per select data {HSM (Urban): NCCS All: Prime Time (1800 – 2330 hrs): 4+ Individuals}, Colors' Naagin Season 2 led the top programmes list with 7.940 million Impressions. Sony Entertainment Television's The Kapil Sharma Show stands at No. 2 with 7.146 million Impressions. Colors' Shani stood at No. 3 with 6.408 million Impressions while Zee TV's Kumkum Bhagya slipped to No. 4 with 6.320 million Impressions. Colors' Shakti – Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki stood at No. 5 with 6.269 million Impressions.

Top channels in Rural markets

Rishtey continued its lead with 409.571 million Impressions. At No. 2, Zee Anmol gained eyeballs as it garnered 400.799 million Impressions. Sony Pal stood at No. 3 with 373.988 million Impressions. Star Utsav stood at No. 4 with 342.382 million Impressions. Star Plus stood at No. 5 with 235.398 million Impressions. Zee TV stood at No. 6 with 227.197 million Impressions. Colors slipped to No. 7 with 211.405 million Impressions. At No. 8, Life OK garnered 154.190 million Impressions. Sony Entertainment Television stood at No. 9 with 142.834 million Impressions and Big Magic trailed at No. 10 with 129.779 million Impressions.

Star Utsav's Saath Nibhaana Saathiya stood at No. 2 with 5.755 million Impressions. Zee Anmol's Jodha Akbar slipped to No. 3 with 5.673 million Impressions. Sony Pal's Baalveer stayed put at No. 4 with 5.507 million Impressions. Zee Anmol's Afsar Bitiya stood at No. 5 with 5.310 million Impressions.
