Discover Science brings the shocking reality of sinkholes in its new series 'Sinkhole: Swallowed Alive'. These sinkholes are geological time bombs that remain a possible threat, ticking beneath America's surface. Silent, until they're not. Hidden from sight until suddenly the earth slips away, swallowing everything and everyone on the ground above. The show will air every Saturday at 7 PM.

The captivating new series will focus on the vast sinkholes which have appeared overnight, washing away the surface beneath creating a huge pit. These 'cover-collapse' sinkholes are the deadly threat that lurks in the Florida underworld.

Sinkholes are as much a part of the Florida landscape as palm trees and alligators. Florida has more of them than any state in the nation and they aren't occurring at a greater rate than usual but the high-profile nature of a recent one in populated areas has drawn attention to them.

Rahul Johri Rahul Johri

Rahul Johri, EVP and General Manager-South Asia and Head of Revenue, Pan-Regional Ad Sales & Southeast Asia, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific, said, “Discovery Science continues to present the most amazing and unusual stories from across the world. Sinkhole: Swallowed Alive breaks down the science of these terrifying freaks of nature and tells the harrowing stories of survival in Florida.”

The show will discuss what causes these sinkholes which could be formed naturally or triggered by heavy rainfall, drought followed by heavy rainfall, tropical storms and human activity. The most common actions by humans that cause sinkholes are heavy pumping of groundwater to spray on oranges and strawberries, well drilling, excavating, creating landfills, leaking broken water lines and pounding or blasting from construction.

Sudden openings in the earth's surface are shaking people's confidence in the very ground they walk on and no one is immune. A crack opens beneath this swamp expanding to 25 acres. A chasm appears beneath a toxic waste disposal pond, threatening to poison the water supply.  A crater imperils a small town. These sinkholes are growing to epic proportions.
