TRAI extends deadline for comments on ad cap regulation

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had released a draft of the 'Standards of Quality of Service (Duration of Advertisements in Television Channels) (Amendment) Regulation, 2012' on August 27, 2012 for which comments of stakeholders were sought by September 11, 2012. The regulator has extended the last date for receipt of comments to September 24, 2012 on the request of stakeholders.
The draft regulation talks about the 12 minutes per hour limit for ads on TV channels.
With the primary objective of striking a balance between giving the consumer a good TV viewing experience and protecting the commercial interests of broadcasters, a consultation paper titled 'Issues related to Advertisements in TV channels' was issued on March 16, 2012. Based on the views/comments of stakeholders, including consumers and consumer organisations, analysEs of various aspects, facts and available studies, TRAI notified the 'Standards of Quality of Service (Duration Of Advertisements in Television Channels) Regulations' dated May 14, 2012.
The regulation was challenged by several broadcasters in TDSAT. Taking into consideration the issues raised by the broadcasters, the authority decided to review the Standards of Quality of Service (Duration of Advertisements in Television Channels) Regulations, dated May 14, 2012. Accordingly, a draft regulation 'Standards of Quality of Service (Duration of Advertisements in Television Channels) (Amendment) Regulations, 2012' was prepared for consultation with the stakeholders on August 27, 2012.
