With entries from over 27 countries, the festival witnessed an exceptionally strong competition. Indian FM stations pick up a clutch of awards

publive-imageNew York Festivals International Radio Program & Promotions Awards honoured the world's best radio programmes on June 18 at the 2012 Radio Awards ceremony. This year's international grand jury awarded 37 Gold, 44 Silver, and 45 Bronze trophies from entries from 28 countries. In addition, 70 entries received Finalist Certificates.

Now in its 30th year of honouring 'The World's Best Radio Programs', the competition honours the most original and innovative work in radio broadcasting, with entries from radio stations, networks and independent producers from around the world. All entries were judged online by the NYF Radio Program and Promotions Awards Grand Jury, comprising radio experts from stations and companies around the globe.

India fared fairly well

93.5 Red FM Bengaluru was declared a Gold Radio Winner for Ondhu Chance in the Information/Documentary competition for the Community Service category.

Reliance Broadcast Network's 92.7 Big FM was also a Gold Radio Winner in the Best Special Event category with its 'Rosy Massage Parlour' in the Entertainment competition. The message also won a Bronze award in Public Service Announcement Promotion. Its Morning Station ID was the Silver Radio Winner in the Station ID category.

Fever 104 FM was awarded Bronze Radio for 'Fever Prastuti Gandhi' in the Best Sound category's Craft & Technique competition.

Finalist Certificates were awarded to 94.3 MY FM for 'Ek Rupiya Abhiyaan' in Best Human Interest Story category; Suryan FM 93.5 Hyderabad for 'Silly Fellow' in Best Regularly Scheduled Comedy Program category.

RJ Raunak of 93.5 Red FM received a Finalist Certificate for On-Air Talent Competition in the Best Comedy/Humour Personality: Local Market.

Club FM 94.3 secured Finalist Certificate for 'It Happens Only in India' in the Morning Drive Programming for Best Information/News Talk Show category.

Radio Mango 91.9 got two Finalist Certificates for 'Mimicry Jingle' in Best Sound category while Raghu got it for on-air talent in Best Radio Personality: Local Market category.

92.7 Big FM's 'Early Morning Jingle' also secured a Finalist Certificate in the

Craft & Technique Competition in the category of Best Sound, apart from one in Public Service Announcement Promotion Category for 'Teena'.

After bagging eight awards at the IRF, the winning streak continues for us and we have won Gold and two Finalist Certificates at the New York Festivals. Recognition at such prestigious awards reflects the fact that our programming initiatives are innovative and disruptive.”

Grand Trophies

The 2012 Grand Jury awarded two Grand Trophies to Pirate Group, Canada, and George Washington Global Media Institute, USA. George Washington Global Media Institute was honoured with a Grand Trophy in Best Talk/Interview Special category for 'The Kalb Report – Anchoring 9/11: The Day and The Decade'. Pirate Group earned a Grand Trophy in the Business/Consumer Issues category for 'The Happy Homemaker: How Advertising Invented The House Wife'. The award-winning two-part episode examined how Madison Avenue created the archetype of the Happy Homemaker in an effort to create a market for all the household products it was advertising.

George Washington University Professor & Executive Producer Michael Freedman said, “We are deeply touched to be recognised by The New York Festivals which celebrates the most enduring and endearing medium of all – radio. To see our students light up when they first feel the magic of the medium is so very special and to have their efforts rewarded with an honour of this magnitude can only deepen their commitment to raise the bar for the next generation. This is a very special moment for all of us and one we shall never forget.”

Terry O'Reilly, Pirate Radio Co-Founder & Host of CBC Radio's Age of Persuasion said, “Winning a Grand Trophy at the NYF Program & Promotion Awards is simply one of the highest tributes in the radio world because of what it represents: the best programmes judged by the most respected radio professionals in a show where 28 countries compete. And to win it two years in a row is just an incredible honour. We are thrilled.”

RTÉ Radio Ireland's exceptional work earned the prestigious Broadcaster of the Year Award for the second year in a row. Liam O'Brien, series producer of 'Documentary on One' for RTÉ Radio accepted the trophy. In addition, RTÉ received four Gold awards, six Silver awards, five Bronze awards, and 10 Finalist Certificates.

This year's competition received many distinguished entries commemorating 9/11. In addition to earning the Grand Trophy for “The Kalb Report –Anchoring 9/11: The Day and The Decade”, the entry also received a Gold Trophy. The following entries highlighting the anniversary of 9/11 also garnered awards in this year's competition: “Flaps Podcast - September 2011” by Flaps Podcast, UK was honored with a Gold Trophy; “The Fear of 9/11” by The Audio Orchard, Ireland earned a Silver Trophy; “Victim No. 0001” Documentary on One for RTÉ Radio, Ireland took home a Silver Trophy, in addition to a Finalist Certificate for “The John Kelly Ensemble - Reich WTC 9/11”, RTÉ Lyric FM, Ireland; “The Day Before 9/11” for BBC Radio 4, UK received a Silver Trophy, and “Michael Goldfarb On 9/11” for BBC Radio 3, UK by Wise Buddah, UK earned a Bronze Trophy.  Both “Performance Today: 9/11, Ten Years Later” by American Public Media, USA; and “Faith and 9/11” created by TBI Media, UK were recognized with a Finalist Certificates.

Music themed entries scored top honours: “Elwood's BluesMobile” was awarded a Gold Trophy and “Jimi Hendrix: The Live Experience” was honoured with a Bronze for Ben Manilla Productions, USA ; “Killer Queen” took home Gold and Bronze Trophies for TBI Media, UK; “Mr Mojo Risin” was awarded  both Gold and Silver trophies for Ten Alps Radio, UK; “Marianne Faithfull - In Her Own Words” was honoured with a Silver Trophy for Smooth Radio, UK, and a Finalist Certificate for “The Best of Love Live Music 2011”; and “Bob Dylan and Me” was awarded a Finalist Certificate for BBC Radio 4,Whistledown Productions, UK.

Having debuted two years ago, NYF's World's Best Radio Programs honours radio programming and promotions in all lengths and formats from radio stations, networks and independent producers from around the globe. They recognise the World's Best Work in Advertising and TV, Film and Radio programmes and honour advertising and marketing in global communications through annual competitions.
