After the much talked about viral video, 'Why this Kolaveri Di?' that spread like a fire through social networking sites and received 1.3 millions views on YouTube and 1 million shares on Facebook within a few days of its launch, it's time now for WTF!
Contrary to the popular slang, WTF represents a viral campaign that puns on the age-old question of why 'Women Take Forever' to get ready. Started by three comedians – Varun Thakur, Karan Talwar and Satan Bhagat – about a week ago, the viral campaign has gained rapid momentum. Over 5 million people have already given quirky one-liners with the hash tag WTF, sharing their views on the subject.
The phenomena started last Saturday when Thakur, while waiting for his friend, tweeted that he is sick of waiting and that #Women Take Forever. He took this further with another tweet predicting that he was unable to reach from Andheri East to Andheri West #beforewomengetready'.
Talking about the incident, Thakur said, “I must confess that as a man, it takes me all of two minutes to get ready. I do understand that it's a lot harder for women as they do so much more like hair, makeup, etc., but sometimes it just gets ridiculous! So it was one of those ridiculous times and we just decided to roll with it.”
Little did they know that a funny tweet done as an act of boredom would pick up as a frenzy on Twitter in just 45 minutes of its launch. In two hours, the page had over 8,000 fans with a lot of frenetic activity on the subject.
This can be testified by the fact that there were over 40 tweets a second for 30 minutes on Twitter as the trend overtook India. The result was also that the topic trended globally on Twitter for around 11 minutes as well.
In fact, the viral campaign has seen some prominent celebrities tweeting on the topic. Here is a sample:
Ayushmann Khurrana, MTV VJ: We'll solve the Kashmir issue #beforewomengetready
Konkana Sen Sharma, Actor: Men still wouldn't have bathed #beforeWomenGetReady
VJ Hoezayy, VJ and RJ: Parliament will pass the Lokpal bill #beforewomengetready
Kainaz Motivala, Actor: Adnan Sami will get a six-pack #beforewomengetready
The campaign has indeed aroused huge interest and heated and sarcastic responses from women. Talking about the mixed responses to the campaign, Thakur said, “The response has been overwhelming. I think the statistics speak for it. People are uploading videos and photos on the group. Hashtags are trending on Twitter. But the most enjoyable part of it is seeing angry females coming on to the page and commenting. Guess I wasn't the only silent sufferer."
But this isn't all. Thakur and his partners in crime are charting strategies to take it to the next level. As he explained, “The campaign is already at the next level. There are people emailing every day for T- shirts. People are uploading videos and sharing photos. We are trending on Twitter regularly, and even celebs have started taking notice.”
