The Guru-Shishya parampara signifies the eternal bond between a teacher and a student. IBN7 India's leading Hindi news channel in association with MPGI Pratap University announced the winners of the 1st edition of 'IBN7 Guru Shishya Awards'. The award is a tribute to an everlasting bond between a mentor and his pupil; both of whom have made a mark in their respective fields and have kept the sacred Guru-Shishya tradition alive. In a glittering ceremony held in the capital today, Mr. Kapil Sibal, Cabinet Minister for Human Resource Development and Communications & IT, felicitated such inspiring Guru-Shishya jodis. The grand finale of the award ceremony will be telecast on IBN7 on August 20 at 8pm & August 21 at 3pm. The show will also be telecast on CNN-IBN on August 21 at 4pm.

Nine such inspiring Guru-Shishya duos from Sports, Education, Public Service, Theater, Arts & Music were felicitated at the awards ceremony. The event also witnessed a Lifetime Achievement Award being presented to the Guru Shishya jodi of Desh Prem Azad & Kapil Dev. Desh Prem Azad is the man who took a lanky 14 year fast bowler, Kapil Dev and turned him into the magnificent bowler this country has ever produced.

This initiative is a tribute to a special bond that inspires greatness, bridges two generations and takes knowledge to greater heights. IBN7 Guru Shishya Awards is aimed at reinstating this sacred relationship in the consciousness of modern India to keep this eternal tradition alive for generations to come.

The following Guru-Shishyas jodis, that were awarded at the event, in alphabetical order:

  • Guru Amod K. Kanth & Shishya Arun Grover – By striving for the betterment of the lives of street children, Arun Grover has been carrying forward the legacy of her mentor Amod Kanth, an activist.

  • Guru Anand Kumar & Shishya Suresh Ram – Anand Kumar, the teacher who runs Super 30, an IIT coaching center and Suresh Ram, his prodigious student who studied at the IIT & now has a job at L&T.

  • Guru Barry John & Shishya Manoj Bajpayee - Thrice rejected by NSD, Manoj Bajpayee joined renowned theatre guru Barry John, who mentored him and helped Manoj become a highly acclaimed actor and carve a niche for himself.

  • Guru Pt. Birju Maharaj & Shishya Saswati Sen Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj and Saswati Sen, who took forward this art and has become an iconic figure in the world of Kathak.

  • Guru Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia & Shishya Rakesh Chaurasia – A master flutist himself, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia helped his nephew Rakesh Chaurasia master the right balance of strength and serenity while playing a flute. The most accomplished disciple of his uncle, Rakesh, a child prodigy, is now taking the Chaurasia legacy to greater heights.

  • Guru Jagdish Singh & Shishya Vijender Singh – A Dronacharya Awardee, Jagdish Singh created history when he coached four of the five member boxing team including Vijender Singh, the bronze medal winner at the Beijing Olympics, the first ever by an Indian boxer.

  • Guru Sameena Iqbal & Shishya Ovessa Iqbal - Thanks to her mentor & elder sister Sameena Iqbal's constant support and encouragement, Ovessa Iqbal created history by becoming the first Muslim girl from Jammu and Kashmir to clear the Civil Services Exam at the age of 25.

  • Guru Satpal Singh & Shishya Sushil Kumar - Satpal Singh, an Arjuna awardee and a gold medalist in wrestling at the 1982 Asian Games, trained and mentored young Sushil Kumar who went on to win a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics.

Speaking on the initiative, Rajdeep Sardesai, Editor-in-Chief, CNN-IBN, IBN7 & IBN-Lokmat, said, “We take immense pleasure in institutionalising an award which is inspired from the deep set tradition of Guru & Shishya. IBN7 Guru Shishya Awards is an effort to recognise the unconditional relationship between a student and a teacher. It is a tribute to a special bond that inspires greatness, bridges two generations and takes knowledge to greater heights.”

Speaking about the awards, Ashutosh, Managing Editor, IBN7, said, “IBN7 Guru-Shishya awards is our sincere effort to acknowledge and recognize the catalysts of our culture, whose significant contribution have proved that learning is a continuous endeavour, and not a momentary inspiration. What makes this initiative unique is the fact that this is the first time that a deserving duo will be awarded for their contribution, rather than an individual.”
