Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific to offer 3D content in Japan

Expands partnership with J:COM On Demand, a VOD service operated by Jupiter Telecom. July 29, 2011:

Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific (DNAP), a division of the number-one nonfiction media company Discovery Communications, has announced that it will start distributing 3D programmes in Japan for the first time through J:COM On Demand, a VOD service operated by Jupiter Telecom, and LISMO Video Store (*a HIKARI Video Channel for TV service) operated by KDDI.

“We were a pioneer in HD as the first international broadcaster in Japan to launch a 24/7 channel and now, we are moving to the next phase of television viewing with 3D. This 3D content offering provides viewers with a "closest to real" viewing experience from the comfort of their own homes. It is a small initial step, but I am excited that we have begun moving into this innovative field. Discovery will continue to take advantage of new growth opportunities in emerging media platforms like this to bring our audience the latest and best in entertainment," said James Gibbons, senior vice-president and general manager, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific – Japan.

From August 1, viewers will be able to watch two popular series - Discovery Channel's GHOST LAB and Animal Planet's THE HAUNTED - in 3D on the J:COM on Demand service. The programmes were selected in line with the paranormal theme for the month of August. They can be accessed using a special 3D button on the service screen on J:COM on Demand and by clicking on the 3D Contents option within the service menu on the LISMO Video Store. Viewers will need to have a 3D television set to enjoy this 3D offering.

To commemorate the launch and as part of the paranormal themed month, both linear channels Discovery Channel and Animal Planet distributed on CATV and other platforms will also feature horror documentaries in August.

Our new 3D on VOD option will enable viewers to enjoy their favourite programmes in a whole new way and learn more about our linear channels".

Discovery Networks International (DNI) also announced yesterday that it has signed its first ever 3D deal with two of its biggest UK distribution partners, BSkyB and Virgin Media, to provide their customers with access to a range of compelling 3D content. Under the agreement, the breadth of Discovery’s trademark high-quality content on offer will significantly transform the 3D offerings in the UK for both BSkyB and Virgin Media customers.
