IRS Q1 2011: Top 10 Dailies in Mumbai
9 out of top 10 dailies in Mumbai register growth; Hindustan Times and DNA grow by over 12%.

Unlike last quarter of Indian Readership Survey when 8 out of top 10 dailies had lost readers, first quarter of IRS 2011 has witnessed growth in 9 out of top 10 dailies. According to the Average Issue Readership, Hindustan Times has become 5th largest read daily in all form and languages of newspapers while remaining second largest read broadsheet English daily in Mumbai. It had acquired this position by replacing DNA in IRS Q3 2010.
'The Times of India' continues to rule the financial capital of India with 16.05 Lakh readers in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 15.51 lakh in Q4 2010 and 14.51 lakh in Q1 2010. Thus the daily has grown by 10.6% over the past one year. TOI has seen a growth of 3.5% in its readership numbers over the last quarter and added 54,000 readers in the current quarter. In last quarter TOI had an AIR of 15.59 lakh.
Recovering from the loss in the last quarter, Marathi daily 'Maharashtra Times' continues to be the No. 2 daily in the Mumbai with 10.2 lakh readers in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 9.62 lakh in Q4 2010 and 9.29 lakh in Q1 2010. The daily has grown by 9.8% over the last one year.
Gujarati daily 'Gujarat Samachar' has strengthened its position at No.3 by recording consecutive growth from past 4 quarters. It had replaced Mumbai Mirror in previous quarter survey to become the third largest read newspaper in Mumbai. The paper has recorded an AIR of 7.96 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 7.76 lakh in Q4 2010 and 6.21 lakh in Q1 2010. Thus Gujarat Samachar has been the largest gainer in Mumbai market with more than 28% of growth over the past one year.
Tabloid size daily 'Mumbai Mirror' has regained its lost readership and registered a growth of over 10% in IRS Q1 2011. The paper has recorded an AIR of 7.69 lakh as compared to 6.96 lakh in previous quarter and 8.11 lakh in Q1 2010. On yearly basis the daily has lost over 5% readers.
Growing by 12.2% in the current survey, 'Hindustan Times' has jumped up to 5th spot in Mumbai among all languages newspapers. HT has been continuously growing in the financial capital and it has registered 28% growth over the past one year. It remains second largest read broadsheet English daily in Mumbai. The English daily has an AIR of 6.88 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 6.13 lakh in Q4 2010 and 5.38 lakh in Q1 2010.
Pushed at No.6, the average issue readership of Marathi daily 'Loksatta' remains unchanged in IRS Q1 2011. Loksatta has an AIR of 6.52 lakh. However, the paper has grown by 5% over the year as it had an AIR of 6.2 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.
'DNA' has shown recovery in the first quarter of IRS 2011 and taken its AIR at 6.44 lakh as compared to 5.72 lakh in the previous quarter and 6.10 lakh in Q1 2010. HT had taken over DNA in Q3 2010 to become the second largest broadsheet newspaper of Mumbai. DNA currently holds 7th position among all languages newspapers.
At 8th spot is 'Lokmat'. The paper has recorded an AIR of 5.6 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 5.7 lakh in previous quarter and 5.86 lakh in Q1 2010.
'Navakal' is holding the 9th spot with 5.08 lakh readers in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 4.91 lakh readers in the last survey and 6.06 lakh in IRS Q1 2010. The paper has lost more than 16% of its readers over the past one year.
Navbharat Times too has recovered from its last quarter loss and recorded an AIR of 4.91 lakh in IRS Q1 2011 as compared to 4.7 lakh in previous quarter; however, it has not been able find readers equal to the first quarter of IRS 2010. It had an AIR of 5.02 lakh in IRS Q1 2010.
