NYF Gives Away Inaugural TV & Film Lifetime Achievement Award

International Television & Film Awards will honor legendary documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles in annual NAB Show.

New York Festivals® International Television & Film Awards will honor legendary documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles with the inaugural Television & Film Awards 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award.  The iconic filmmaker will be presented with the award on Tuesday, April 12^th at the Television & Film Awards ceremony taking place at the annual NAB Show in Las Vegas.  The NYF Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes prominent industry leaders whose accomplishments and contributions have advanced their field and made a lasting impression on the industry.

“I am honored and thankful to be receiving the New York Festivals' Lifetime Achievement Award, which only confirms support for my lifelong aims as a documentary filmmaker. As a documentarian I happily place my fate and faith in reality. It is my caretaker, the provider of subjects, themes, experiences – all endowed with the power of truth and the romance of discovery. And the closer I adhere to reality the more honest and authentic my tales. After all, the knowledge of the real world is exactly what we need to better understand and therefore possibly to love one another. It is my way of helping to make the world a better place,” said Albert Maysles.

Albert Maysles has been referred to as “the dean of documentary filmmakers” by The New York Times and as “the greatest American cameraman” by Jean-Luc Godard.   Albert, along with his brother David (1932-1987), is recognized as a pioneer of “direct cinema.”   His unsurpassed body of work totals more than 40 films, including: Gimme Shelter, chronicling the Rolling Stones epic 1969 tour; Grey Gardens, the intimate portrait of East Hampton recluses Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter “Little Edie”; and Muhammad and Larry, which closely follows Muhammad Ali in 1980 as he prepares to fight his friend and former sparring partner, Larry Holmes, for a chance to win an unprecedented fourth heavyweight title.

In 2005, Mr. Maysles founded the Maysles Institute, a non-profit organization in Harlem that exhibits independently curated films to inspire dialogue and action and advances community produced films through education programs.

Mr. Maysles has received numerous accolades during his illustrious career, including a Guggenheim Fellowship (1965), two Peabody Awards (Abortion: Desperate Choices, The Gates), three Emmy Awards, five Lifetime Achievement Awards, and the Columbia Dupont Award. His film, Lalee's Kin: The Legacy of Cotton (2000), won the award for best cinematography at the Sundance Film Festival and was also nominated for an Academy Award. Eastman Kodak has saluted him as one of the world's 100 finest cinematographers. And in 2010, Grey Gardens was selected to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.

Most recently, along with filmmaking partner, Bradley Kaplan, Mr. Maysles received the 2010 NYF International Television & Film Awards Grand Trophy award for their ESPN “30 for 30” film, Muhammad and Larry.

“In choosing Albert Maysles as our first Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, New York Festivals honors a man whose work has had a major impact in broadcast and film, not only for his achievements in direct cinema, but also for his influence on documentarians who have gone on to prominence in their own right,” commented Rose Anderson, NYF Television & Film Awards Executive Director.

The New York Festivals Awards ceremony will shine the spotlight on the 2011 World's Best TV & Films, as well as present the Lifetime Achievement Award, Broadcaster of the Year, Production Company of the Year, and United Nations Department of Public Information Awards.  Ceremony attendees will have access to the NAB Show, the NAB Show content conferences, speakers, exhibitions, and special screenings of the Grand Award winners in the Content Theater.

Albert Maysles will also host a conference featuring a screening and conversation with the filmmaker on Tuesday, April 12^th.  Trophies will be awarded at the 2011 Television & Film Awards ceremony taking place on April 12^th at the annual NAB Show in Las Vegas April 9-14^th.
