Siemens, in association with IBNLive.com (India’s leading news website) launched the IBNLive-Siemens EcovativesTM Awards 2010, acknowledging the efforts of change by medium and large corporate enterprises, to achieve ecology-friendly systems of manufacture and business in making industrial and other growth processes environmentally sustainable. EcovativesTM are those organizations who have undertaken innovative environment friendly initiatives in their regular business activities, without losing their leadership position in their core area of operations. Ernst & Young partnered with this venture as the Process Advisor. They evaluated and short-listed the nominees and the winners after rigorous field visits.

The inaugural year of the awards saw Mahindra Vehicle Manufacturers Ltd. get the EcovativesTM Low Energy award for their initiative to recover heat from the ovens and use it to heat chemicals in 2 of the paint shops in their new plant in Chakan, thereby reducing use of 1500 tons of LPG every year. The initiative will avoid 1200 tons of CO2 emission every year.

The EcovativesTM Earth Care award went to Atul Ltd., a chemical company that went all the way to UAE to source Date Palm tissue culture, create a joint venture company with the Government of Rajasthan and replant these trees in Jaisalmer and Bikaner. This gives a source of livelihood for the villagers from harvesting Date Palm, creates wind barriers, and helps conserve soil in the dessert.

Patni Computers Systems Ltd. was given the EcovativesTM Building award for their LEED Platinum rated office building run on recycled material, natural lighting and smart air-conditioning among other features, which the  management feel have reduced attrition rate.

The EcovativesTM Conservation award went to ITC Limited - Paper Boards & Speciality Papers Division. In an attempt to replace import of wastepaper and save foreign exchange, ITC set up an effort to promote waste segregation and collection and livelihood for local people, to make a sustainable impact.

Orchid Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd. was the winner of the EcovativesTM Wild Card Entry award for their efforts in using known technology and adapting it to the requirements of the pharma industry in India for the first time.
