India-Australia cricket series gets more sponsors than the CWG. The advertisers blame bad press surrounding the games as the main reason for staying away from the games.

The opening ceremony of the commonwealth games might have caught the eyeballs of the viewers but the sponsors remained aloof from the games. Neither did the games get any major sponsors other than Coca Cola, Hero Honda and Reebok nor did they get MNC advertisers on the board.
All the negative press built around the games forced the sponsors to pull back their money. The advertisers prefer the India-Australia test series over the commonwealth games for advertising. Major brands like Airtel have shown their faith in cricket over the games. The advertisers and marketing gurus blame all the bad press and bad public relations as the main reasons for their staying aloof from the games.
Even the PSUs like NTPC, Indian Railways, PowerGrid Corporation of India pulled out of CWG sponsorships. The major brands which advertised during the opening ceremony broadcast were the likes of Wynncom Mobiles and Rage Mobiles. Other than this Incredible India advertisements and Gujrat tourism ads captured most of the airtime for ads.
indian rlys and ntpc have not pulled out ...please recheck your facts ...but i agree, a world wide viewership of 30 million is not much ...only about 3 trp's , if you take dd penetration as 100% in India ! and many may have just switched on to check if the stadium would fall down...so, pretty negative mind set ...that does not augur well for advertisers ..
