Twitter removes verified tick from journalist’s account over call to boycott Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming movie

On the occasion of 75th Independence Day, what trended on Twitter was #BoycottAajtak and #BoycottZeeNews, owing to the tweets of two journalist which infuriated SRKians across the country

Microblogging platform Twitter has restricted some fan pages and removed the verified blue tick from the account of a journalist on its platform after a recent controversy which resulted in #BoycottAajtak and #BoycottZeeNews trending.

As per Twitter users, the platform has restricted certain fan pages of Shahrukh Khan.

The controversy started when Anuj Kumar Bajpai, a reporter working with Zee News, shared a screen grab from actor Shah Rukh Khan’s video on Twitter with the caption, ‘Fir bhi Pathan ka Bahishkar Jaari rahega’ (even after this the boycott of Pathan will continue). Khan had earlier shared a video in which he along with his family posed with the Tricolour on the occasion of the 75th Independence Day.
In the now deleted tweet, the Zee News reporter had expressed his sentiments regarding Khan’s upcoming movie.

As a result, according to screengrabs shared by fans of the actor, not only did Bajpai lose his verified tick on Twitter but also lost his job owing to the furore on Twitter.

The angry Twitteratis had demanded sacking of the journalist and began trending #BoycottZeeNews on Twitter.

Similarly, Aaj Tak also faced backlash after one of its employees, Ashutosh Chaturvedi took to Twitter with what the platform’s users construed as a call to boycott SRK’s upcoming movie.

Chaturvedi’s tweet read, “Chaddha sahab ke baad suna hai Pathan Sahab bhi aa rahe hai.. Kya khayaal hai mitro.” (After Chaddha Sahab, I have heard that Pathan Sahab is also coming. What are your thoughts friends?).

This seemed hurtful and insulting to the actor’s fans as the recently released Aamir Khan film 'Laal Singh Chaddha' has failed to draw audiences to the theatres, amid calls for boycott of the same.

As of now, both the persons have deleted the respective tweets from their handles, while the blue tick of Bajpai has also been removed by the platform, along with some action on the fan pages which were running the hashtags against the news platforms at which the two were working.
